Sacha Inchi, or Inca Inchi (Plukenetia volubilis), is an oleaginous perennial plant native to the tropical rain forests of Central and South America. The plant has been cultivated by indigenous people for centuries. The fruits of the Sacha Inchi plant are capsules consisting of four (up to seven) lobes, which contain the seeds. The fruits are green but turn blackish brown when they ripen. The seeds are oval-shaped, have a dark brown colour, and are extraordinarily rich in protein and essential fatty acids.
The oil is pressed from the seeds, and contains over 47% Omega-3 essential fatty acids and over 38% Omega-6 essential fatty acids. It is regarded as one of the most concentrated sources of plant-based Omega-3 essential fatty acids available. A rich source of antioxidants and Vitamins A (retinol) and E (alpha-tocopherol).
